UnitedHealthcare, a UnitedHealth Group company, awarded a $250,000 grant to support Hilo Medical Center’s Hawaii Health Systems Corp. Primary Care Training Program to help enhance primary care services for East Hawaii residents.

The grant will help provide funding to establish Hilo Medical Center’s primary care training program, in which family medicine residents will train at the Hawaii Island Family Health Center and provide primary care services.

This interdisciplinary program is in collaboration with the University of Hawaii at Hilo’s School of Nursing, The Daniel K. Inouye College of Pharmacy, the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s School of Nursing and Dental Hygiene, and the University of Hawaii at Manoa’s John A. Burns School of Medicine’s Department of Psychiatry. The program was conceived as a way to increase access to quality primary care while training the next generation of physicians.

Digital business seminars slated Sept. 11, 12

Tonya Wren, digital sales and marketing manager at Stephens Media Inc., will lead two days of free, digital business seminars for Hawaii Island businesses. Sessions last 60 minutes, with Wren showing business owners and employees how to maximize digital for their budget to reach more customers.

The seminars will be offered in two tracks, Digital Basics, which teaches about online presence and how to control content online, even without a website, and Growing Your Business, which teaches about digital marketing solutions and how businesses can best use those options.

Seminars will be offered in Kailua-Kona and Waimea.

The Digital Basics seminar will be offered at 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. Sept. 11 at the West Hawaii Civic Center, and 9 a.m. Sept. 12 at Anna Ranch Historic Home and Heritage Center in Waimea. Growing Your Business will be offered at 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. Sept. 11 at the West Hawaii Civic Center and 11 a.m. Sept. 12 at Anna Ranch Historic Home and Heritage Center.

Holuakoa restaurant nominated for regional award

Holuakoa Gardens and Cafe, a slow food restaurant in Holualoa, has been nominated again for the Honolulu Magazine Hale Aina Award for the best restaurant on the Big Island. Online public voting at honolulumagazine.com/haleaina ends Saturday.

Holuakoa Gardens and Cafe promotes sustainable agriculture and healthy food consciousness for Hawaii Island. The restaurant uses local and organic produce from farms within 5 miles of its location, when possible. Vegetarian options are available. Aloha party planned for Lulu’s

Humpy’s Big Island Alehouse, which purchased Lulu’s last year, is throwing an aloha party for Lulu’s from noon to 9 p.m. Aug. 30. The Kona restaurant’s new name and theme will be unveiled during the event, which features live music, food and drink specials, games and giveaways.

talk slated Wednesday

LUVA Real Estate is offering a complimentary class to help area Realtors improve their ability to use social media in outreach and marketing endeavors.

“Facebook Business Pages for Real Estate” is an hour-long training course on how to set up a business page on Facebook and create a content strategy. Examples of Realtors using business pages to drive engagement and leads will be presented.

State program helps connect local entrepreneurs, investors

The Hawaii Strategic Development Corp. Board of Directors recently approved the HI Growth CAN (Connect and Network) program, a sponsorship platform to support networking opportunities for local entrepreneurs and investors.

This program is a part of the HI Growth Initiative, a $6 million investment strategy proposed as part of the Abercrombie Administration’s 2013 legislative package and signed into law on July 9 by Lt. Gov. Shan Tsutsui.

HI Growth CAN will be administered by the High Tech Development Corp. The program will kickoff in Honolulu at the High Tech Development Corp.’s WetWare Wednesday and will also hold informational/Q&A sessions for neighbor island communities.

Michael and Monica Sanders recently opened Monimay Salon, located at 74-5563 Kaiwi St. in Kailua-Kona.

HIC opens Waimea shop

Hawaiian Island Creations opened a store at the Parker Ranch Center in Waimea Aug. 16. This is HIC’s 13th store in Hawaii and the fourth store to open on the Big Island in just two and a half years. A grand opening celebration will announced.

HIC Waimea is a 1,960-square-foot retail store located next to Starbucks in the Parker Ranch Center. HIC Regional Manager, Dayton De Luz, will oversee daily operations of all four Big Island locations.

“Our goal is to provide Big Island locals and visitors with the same selection, quality and service that HIC has been recognized for on Oahu for over 40 years,” CEO Leigh Tonai said. “With stores in Kona, Hilo, Kohala Coast, and now Waimea, we are proud to bring our Big Island customers the products and service they deserve.”

Captain Cook bookstore reopens under new management

The public is invited to meet John and Heidi Thompson, the new owners of Reading Garden Bookstore, during the opening sale happening Labor Day weekend.

The book sale is from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 31 and Sept. 1. Free coffee and face painting will also be offered.
